The vulva vestibule is the tissue that surrounds the introitus or opening of the vagina.
The experience of chronic pain or discomfort in this area is called vestibulodynia which is one of the most common types of diagnosed vulvar pain (vulvodynia.)
The specific cause of vestibulodynia has yet to be fully understood, however we do know that tissue in this area is very sensitive and, for many people, can become easily inflamed. Some factors that seem to intensify vestibulodynia include:
Physical injury including childbirth, sexual abuse
Being penetrated before full engorgement/without proper lubrication (especially when consistent)
Sensitivity or allergies to fabrics, soaps, fragrances, etc.
Wearing tight clothing
Sitting for long periods of time
Damaged nerves or an overgrowth of nerve fibers
Chronic yeast infections
Hormonal changes
Genetics
Anytime you experience pelvic pain, especially when chronic, it’s important to seek proper medical treatment from a pelvic floor PT to rule out any serious health conditions.
That being said, sometimes pain and inflammation can flare up in the vestibule or other parts of the vulva and vagina due to emotional stress or as a symptom that the body is holding onto past traumas. When this is the case and there are no major physical issues diagnosed, clients contact me seeking methods to desensitize their vulvar tissue and relieve their pain using somatic healing massage.
Although this type of healing work can take longer than most people would prefer, if approached with patience, somatic massage can be a powerful tool for releasing built up trauma, restoring blood flow and reawakening sensitivity in the vestibule and vulvar tissues.
The somatic massage techniques I teach are often practiced solo, but I love to encourage those in close relationships to invite their partners or friends to join in the experience if they feel safe to do so. There is so much potential for deep intimacy and connection present when approaching genital massage from a healing perspective, with an intentional and tender touch.
